Scabiosa atropurpurea ‘Midnight’
MIDNIGHT PINCUSHIONS
Syn. Sixalix atropurpurea
Scabiosa atropurpurea ‘Midnight’ bears flocks of delightful pincushions that are such a dark burgundy they are almost black.
Each bloom has the finest, feathery petals, very dark burgundy, with a prominent domed pin cushion centre with white stamens dotted through.
It is an arresting colour combination. And they are held on long, fine but strong stems, well above the foliage. So they look like they are floating.
And although each pincushion bloom is quite small, there is such big flying squadrons of them that the overall effect is very eye-catching.
Scabiosa atropurpurea ‘Midnight’ is a long lasting cut flower.
Plus it is a very popular plant to mix into in sunny borders to give airy, transparent colour.
And it is ideal amongst roses because it has height, but does not block airflow.
Try it with apricot, red, pink or white roses for a stunning cloud of colour.
Blooms from late spring to autumn and the the lobed lacy foliage is mid green and pretty all year round.
This lovely biennial self seeds freely. Easy and low water need. 75cm x 60cm.
