Clusters of jewels in old fashioned Garden Auriculas

Garden Auriculas are enchanting – glowing like jewels with old-world tapestry colours.
In an amazing array of colour combinations. But with each flower flashing a bold, contrasting eye.
Garden Auriculas (Primula x pubescens) are much easier and hardy to grow, as compared to cosseted Show Auriculas.

Velvety texture & exquisite tapestry colours

Colours combinations may include deep chocolates, burgundy, maroon, lilac, purples, rose, pinks and even black.
While the bunches of blooms also have an exquisite, deep velvety texture; and often appear to have been dusted with silver flour.

Exquisitely fragrant bunches of blooms

The flowers are borne in posies of clustered heads, with a sweet pure scent.

Heralds of spring

Flower bunches appear during late winter and early spring to usher in the joys of spring; and enchant with their exquisite colours, opulent texture and sweet fragrance.

Beautiful foliage rosettes dusted with silver

The foliage of Primula x pubescens ‘Kaleidoscope’ is also a garden asset.
As they form neat rosettes of broad, grey-blue-green, leathery leaves, often with a silvery dusting too like the flowers.
The rosettes will also multiply each year to form dense clumps, with the flower bunches borne atop on stout stems approx. 15cm. high.

Jewels for shade

Primula x pubescens ‘Kaleidoscope’ clumps enjoy to grow in Dappled Shade under trees and shrubs, or where they receive just a little Morning Sun.
So an east or south facing aspect is perfect.

Mass plant for shaded groundcover

Where they look stunning mass planted to form a groundcover in a shaded area.
The foliage clumps are evergreen – so remain an asset with their unusual form, colour and texture all year, even when they are not in flower.

Robustly frost hardy

Primula x pubescens ‘Kaleidoscope’ clumps enjoy a wide range of soils including heavier soil, clay based soils, as well as lighter and sandy soils generously enriched with compost and leaf mould.
They prefer soil pH from neutral to quite acid – growing where Camellias and Rhododendrons thrive.
And while they are not thirsty plants, they do enjoy consistent moisture in the soil.
Without drying out completely, nor being waterlogged – so they relish mulch and compost on top of well drained soil.

They are also robustly frost hardy.

Special for both garden & feature pots

Garden Auriculas are not difficult to grow, given their preferred conditions, making long lasting perennial clumps.
They are certainly decorative enough to feature in any prominent container or prime garden position.

Rabbit & deer resistant

Mercifully rabbits and deer are not attracted to Primula x pubescens ‘Kaleidoscope’, and generally pass them by on their way to more favoured fodder.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY

Sow indoors in winter, spring or autumn / or scatter outdoors winter or spring.

Indoors:
(Sowing Tip: Primula seeds are very fine and tiny. So pop a little fine sieved mix into the bag containing the seed and shake around to collect the seed, and then sow the contents of the bag).

First sow the seeds in a punnet on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.

Now gently pat the surface to ensure the seeds have good contact with the the mix.
Only barely cover with fine sieved mix or fine vermiculite – because these seeds need light to germinate.

Thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath – allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.

Then place the sown, moist punnet in a well lit position (with good light but absolutely no direct sunlight).
And continue to keep consistently moist by misting regularly with a spray water bottle.
Covering with a plastic cover or bag will also help to maintain consistent moisture.
Primula seed like consistent moisture and resent drying out.

Temperatures of 15-18°C. are best for optimum and rapid germination.

Seedlings emerge in approx. 21-40 days.

However if the seeds are shy to germinate – Then cling wrap the moist sown punnet and place in the  fridge (not freezer) for 4-6 weeks.
Then remove, unwrap and return to well-lit position at 15-18°C. and continue to keep moist.

Seed Count: 20 seeds per pack.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve).
