Primula anisodora
ANISE PRIMROSE

Primula anisodora must surely be one of the loveliest of all the Candelabra Primulas.
Not permitted for entry to WA

Luscious colouring & scent

Because blooms have a fetching anise fragrance as well as enticing deep maroon colouring.
Then each of the flowers sports a dashing yellow eye to complement the velvety deep maroon trumpets.

Amongst the finest of all Candelabra Primula

Intrepid plant hunter George Forrest could not believe his luck when he first laid nose and eye on this beauty in Yunnan Province of China in 1913.
He considered it one of his finest ever finds. And quite right too.
It is a prince amongst Candelabra Primula.

Handsome, decorative foliage

Even the foliage is distinguished and decorative. Making a neat clump of large, broad leaves with heavy, silver veining and serrated edges.

Stately summer spires

Flowers are borne in summer, on tall stately spires, with the flowers stacked in spectacular tiered whorls.

Primula anisodora is an extremely vigorous, hardy and easy to grow Candelabra Primula, providing you give it the conditions it enjoys.
It will hardily tolerate any soil type as long as it is consistently moist.
So it prefers heavier clay based soils or loam with plenty of compost and organic matter.
And it will positively relish a wet, boggy spot such as a dam edge or stream side.
Then it will self seed abundantly in it’s happy place and make regal colour and scent.

Rabbits and deer are not keen

We are fascinated by spectacular Candelabra Primula. But unbelievably rabbits and deer tend to leave them alone, and place Primulas low on their menu selection.

Bees & butterflies love them

However bees and butterflies are very happy sipping from the nectar rich flower whorls.

Light up dark boggy areas

So with damp feet Primula anisodora is happy to grow in either Sun, Part Shade or Shaded positions.

Primula anisodora is a frost hardy perennial with an evergreen rosette of decorative, handsome veined foliage.

60cm. High in magnificent flower spires of deep maroon x 60cm. Wide rosette of evergreen foliage.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY

Sow Primula anisodora seeds indoors in winter, spring or autumn / or scatter outdoors winter or spring. They germinate at the cool times of the year.

Indoors:
(Sowing Tip: Primula seeds are very fine and tiny. So pop a little fine sieved mix or sand into the bag containing the seed, shake around to collect the seed, and then sow the whole contents of the bag).

First sow the seeds in a punnet, on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then press gently to the surface of the mix.
But do not cover because these seeds need light to germinate.

Now thoroughly moisten the punnet by standing it on a shallow water bath and allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.

Then place sown, moist punnet in well-lit, cool position (not in any direct sunlight).

Temperatures of 10°C. to a maximum of 15°C. are ideal for rapid and optimum germination.
And continue to keep consistently moist by misting from a spray water bottle as required.
Covering the punnet with a transparent lid, such as a plastic bag, is a great help in maintaining moisture.
Do not allow the compost to dry out.

Drying out, especially at the time of germination, can be fatal.
Temperatures exceeding 15-20°C will throw the seeds into natural dormancy.
And higher temperatures inhibit germination.

Seedlings emerge in approx. 21-30 days.
But patience – do not discard the punnet too quickly – as it is natural for Primula seeds to stagger their germination and continue to sprout after the first emerge.

Seed Count: 40 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count and give a generous serve).
