Penstemon confertus is unusual, beautiful and gently refined.

Soft creamy-pale yellow slender trumpets

It bears soft, creamy-pale yellow, slender trumpets, close packed together in tiers of flowers, on slender elegant spires.

Prolific blooming & highly desirable Penstemon

Penstemon confertus blooms profusely over late-spring and summer.
With many slender, upright flower wands giving an airy and delicate look.
So it is quite unlike any other Penstemon in both gentle colouring and fine elegance.

Pretty cut flowers

The slender stems are also an asset as cut flowers for fresh vases.

Low foliage mat

While the foliage clump remains as a low, ground hugging mat all year round.

High-rise pantry for bees & pollinators

The slender trumpets, and the long blooming season, make Penstemon confertus irresistable to our flying friends.

Easy to please plant

Penstemon confertus can be planted in both Sun or Part-Shade positions.
And once established it is a water-wise and easily pleased plant.
It is native to prairie grasslands and woodland clearings in the west of U.S.A.
So is perfectly happy mixed into the company of other plants and looks so lovely intermingling it’s pale spires with many other coloured flowers.

Rarely bothered by pests or diseases

However it does resent poorly drained positions.

Copes with a wide range of soils including clay

Penstemon confertus can make a go of it in a wide range of soils from sandy to clay.
So it is not fussy as long as it is not soggy.
So the soil pH can range on either side of neutral.

Very frost hardy

This tough little Penstemon is very cold hardy and can withstand frosts and temperatures down to approx. -30C.

Evergreen perennial clump.
60cm. High with slender wands of tiered flowers x 60cm. Wide evergreen clump of neat foliage.

SEED SOWING ADVICE:

Sow indoors at any time / or scatter outdoors in spring & autumn.

Sow indoors for quick plants & early flowers: First sow the seeds in a punnet on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then gently pat the seeds to the surface of the mix to ensure good contact.

Now barely cover the seeds with fine mix/grit/sand.

Then stand the sown punnet in a shallow water bath and allow the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix to thoroughly moisten.

Now place the moist punnet in a warm, well-lit position (but not in any direct sunlight).

Temperatures around 15-20°C are best for optimum and rapid germination.
You can use a temperature controlled heat mat if you have one.
Though it is not essential as these seeds are willing germinators.

Continue to keep the punnet consistently moist by misting regularly from a spray water-bottle.
Covering the punnet with a clear cover or plastic bag will also help to maintain consistent moisture.

Seeds emerge in 18-21 days approx.

A pretend winter can help

However if the seeds are shy to germinate after 30 days – then the seeds need a period of chilling to break their natural dormancy.
So wrap the moist punnet in cling wrap and place in the fridge (not freezer) for 4-6 weeks. U
Then unwrap & return to a well-lit position at 15-20°C. Keep moist. Seedlings emerge in approx. 18-21 days.

Seed Count: 500 seeds per pack approx.
