Campanula rotundifolia ‘White Gem’ is a little jewel of a performer.

Dancing snow white thimbles

As pretty snow white thimbles of flowers, are held on wiry stems, above a carpet of dark green foliage.
So the dancing thimble flowers enchant in spring and summer.
When they bob about in every breeze, like nimble, leaping hares.
And earn their common name of “Harebells”.

“Scottish Harebells”

Campanula rotundifolia ‘White Gem’ also grows successfully on the sparse, harsh highlands of Scotland, as well as in gentle gardens.
So Campanula rotundifolia does deserve the common name of “Scottish Harebells”.
They are sometimes also called “Bluebells of Scotland” (or Whitebells in this case), as they grow and bloom so thickly across the moors.

Robust little toughie

But don’t let these common names lead you up the Scottish garden path.
Campanula rotundifolia ‘White Gem’ is a robust little toughie, and is perfectly capable of growing in other challenging places, as well as the Scottish Highlands.
It is really quite dry hardy, once established.
So we have it growing in along the paths as a pretty edging, where it performs with little attention.

Unfussy & easy growing groundcover

Campanula rotundifolia ‘White Gem’ enjoys Full Sun or Part Shade, and well drained soil.
Other than this it is a very unfussy and easy going groundcover.
It is perfectly happy in sandy, stony and well drained soil, as well as in average garden loam.
It is not a particularly thirsty or hungry plant, so do not overfeed.

60cm High when in flower, otherwise a flat groundcover of foliage x 45cm. diameter carpet.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Suits beginners & gardening with kids

Sow seeds indoors at any time / or scatter directly in the garden in spring.

Indoors: First sow the seeds in a punnet on the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Then gently pat the surface to ensure the seeds have good contact with the mix.
But do not cover with any mix, because these seeds need light to germinate.

Then thoroughly moisten by standing the sown punnet in a shallow water bath, and allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface from below.

Now place the moist punnet in a warm, well-lit position (not in any direct sunlight).

Temperatures of 18-20°C approx. are best for rapid and optimum germination.

Continue to keep moist by misting from a spray water bottle as required.
Covering the punnet with piece of glass or plastic lid will help to maintain consistent moisture and prevent drying out.

Germination occurs in approx. 14-28 days.

Pot on seedlings once two sets of leaves appear to harden off and mature before finally planting out in the garden after last frost.

Seed Count: 400 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).

Seed sowing Tip: Please note this is extremely fine seed – it is a good idea when you open the seed packet to put a little finely sieved seed raising mix in the bag with the seed, shake around, and then sow the contents (seed + sieved mix together).
You will get more even coverage and not leave any fine seed behind in the bag.

GROWING: Campanula rotundifolia ‘White Gem’

– Height with flowers: 60cm approx.
– Width: 45cm approx.
– Position: Full Sun as well as Partial Shade.
– Soil: Best in slightly alkaline, fertile but well-drained soil. However they will tolerate a range of soil conditions especially once established.

– Fragrance: None
– Frost: Hardy
– Growth: Perennial groundcover.
– Attracts: Bees, birds and also other beneficial pollinators.

– Care: Easy and low maintenance. Apply a slow release fertilizer in early Spring for best growth and flowering. Additionally just a tidy up of old growth and blooms, by cutting back hard after the first flush of flowers are spent. This will promote the next crop of flowers to come on as quickly as possible.
– Deer & Rabbit resistant: Not first choice for these pests but if there isn’t anything else to eat they may have a bite.
– Origin: The species is native to the North Temperate Zone of Eurasia, extending from Britain to Japan. It is also present through most of Europe, except the extreme North, and has also naturalized in North America.
