Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Grandmother’s Garden Mix’
GRANNY’S DOUBLE COLUMBINES
Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Grandmother’s Garden Mix’ have pom pom double flowers, just like the old fashioned lacy bonnets that Grannies wore to bed to cover their hair curlers.
Layers & layers of scalloped petals
Blooms like double pom-poms are made up of layer upon layer of scalloped petals, with perky little short spurs thrown back behind.
Charming antique colours & bicolors
This charming mix of seed, gathered from all the most beautifully coloured, old-worlde plants – provides a range of delightful antique shades.
Such as soft-pinks, lilacs, blues, violets, wine and burgundy, creams and white.
Many of the blooms are also bi-coloured – So the frilly flower skirts will be a different colour to the flouncy petticoat layers, or trimmed with white lace edges.
But all in lovely, antique colour shades as if borrowed from old patchwork quilts.
Dainty & charming
So the double, frilly, flouncy Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Grandmother’s Garden Mix’ blooms give such an old world daintiness to the garden.
But tough as old boots
Though do not let the dainty appearance fool you.
Because Granny’s Double Columbines are hardy and tough survivors.
And once settled in your perennial plants should also self-sow some extra babies each year and create drifts of sweetness under the trees and shrubs – with little further help from you.
Water-wise & resilient
Granny’s Double Columbines bloom profusely during spring and early summer, and are such easy-growing, unfussy plants.
So you can plant them in a wide variety of positions, from Full Sun, to Partial Shade, and in Full Shade too.
Making them a perfect choice to light up dull shaded areas under trees and shrubs, with water-wise, resilient plants, and easy, low maintenance.
Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Grandmother’s Garden Mix’ are frost hardy, evergreen perennial plants.
Also suppling new babies each year by self-sowing in the garden and creating graceful drifts.
These little volunteers are easy to transplant to new areas, share with friends, or weed out if surplus to requirements.
SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY
Seed for Aquilegia vulgaris ‘Grandmother’s Garden Mix’ can be sown indoors at any time, or scattered directly in the garden during autumn or early spring.
Indoors for quick plants: First sow the seed onto the surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Now pat gently to ensure the seeds have good contact with the surface.
Then barely cover with sieved mix / washed sand / or fine grit to a depth same as the seeds diameter.
Now thoroughly moisten the sown punnet by standing it in a shallow water bath.
So the moisture percolates through to the top from the bottom.
Then place the moist, sown punnet in a warm, well lit position (light helps germination of these seeds) but not in any direct sunlight.
You can use a heat mat to speed germination if you have one, but it is not essential.
Temperatures of 15-20 degrees C. are best for rapid and optimum germination.
Seeds germinate in 2 to 4 weeks approx.
Then transplant seedlings into small pots until large enough to plant out in the garden.
If sown directly into ground seed may not germinate until its dormancy is broken by a period of chilling (Winter) – so late autumn or early autumn sowings are most successful.
Seed Count: 70 seeds per pack approx.
(We always aim to exceed the stated seed count, and give a generous serve).
