Delphinium x belladonna ‘Cliveden Beauty’
CLIVEDEN BEAUTY DELPHINIUM

Delphinium x belladonna ‘Cliveden Beauty’ is an oldie but a goodie.

An oldie but goodie & still a favourite

So ‘Cliveden Beauty’  has never fallen from favour for many reasons.
Firstly for it’s iridescent sky-blue flowers, with shades of blue within the petals of rare purity of colour, set off by white central bees.
So they do indeed seem to shimmer with blue, and there is still no other delphinium like it after all these years.

Glorious cut flowers + excellent garden display

Secondly, Delphinium x belladonna ‘Cliveden Beauty’ bears its flowers well spaced on branching stems, rather than closely packed on single, big, plump stems.
So it has an airy, shimmering look in both the garden and the vase.
Making it a wonderful florist’s filler and a beauty planted amongst other flowers or under roses.

Handy size for small gardens

It is a handy size too, growing approx. 75-85cm high x 25-30cm. wide.
So perfect for smaller gardens, rose and mixed flower beds.

Loads of flowers in a small space

Delphinium x belladonna ‘Cliveden Beauty’ is highly productive, with a continuous procession of flowering branches from mid-spring on.
Picking branches for vases (or deadheading spent stems) will keep more and more flowers coming for even longer.

Easy to grow

‘Cliveden Beauty’ is one of the easiest to grow, hardy and long lived of all the different types of Delphiniums.
Plant in Sun to a little Part Shade.
And be generous with feeding and mulch, because it is a beauty that rewards generosity with even more flower laden branches.
It does not require staking.

Robustly frost hardy

Delphinium x belladonna ‘Cliveden Beauty’ is robustly frost hardy.
As it is able to withstand frosts down to -30C, depending on conditions.
So it makes easy growing, low maintenance, perennial clumps, as long as it is generously fed, which are with you for many years. It is a hardy, long-lived perennial.
But do remember to protect your clumps from snails, particularly in early spring when the new foliage and flowers are emerging.
Rough, coarse mulch is a help.

75-85cm High in shimmering sky-blue flower branches x 25-30cm. Wide base of foliage.

SEED SOWING ADVICE: QUICK & EASY

Sow Delphinium seeds in autumn, winter or spring.

Indoors: First place seeds between two sheets of wet paper towel in a sealed plastic bag, and place in fridge for 36 hours.

Then remove, and sow the seeds in punnets on surface of good quality seed raising mix.
Now cover with 5mm of sieved mix or sandy grit.

And thoroughly moisten the whole punnet by standing in a shallow water bath, and allowing the moisture to percolate up to the surface of the mix from below.

Now place the moist, sown punnet in a warm, well-lit position (not in direct sunlight).

Temperatures of 18-21°C approx. are ideal for rapid and optimum germination.

And continue to keep moist by misting from a spray water bottle as required.
Covering the punnet with a clear plastic cover or plastic bag will also help to maintain consistent moisture and prevent drying out.

Most seedlings emerge in approx. 10-20 days.

But do not discard punnet as some seeds may come later. This is a natural process for this plant because it staggers the germination of it’s seeds to give them a better chance of sprouting into favourable weather conditions.

Seed Count:  25 seeds per pack approx.
